Board renews five‑year waiver to continue driver‑ed simulator hours

The Community High School District 128 Board of Education on April 28 approved a renewal of its waiver request to the Illinois state agency to continue using driver‑education simulators in place of some behind‑the‑wheel road time.
Under state law, students in Illinois must receive a minimum of six hours of on‑road behind‑the‑wheel training as part of a driver‑education program. The district said it has long used simulators to substitute part of that training; at Libertyville High School the program provides four hours of simulator time that supplements student instruction.
Dr. Coolentez explained that the waiver allows the district to continue substituting simulator hours for part of the statutory behind‑the‑wheel requirement and that the waiver, if approved by the state, would be valid for five years. The board opened the matter for public comment for the specific driver‑education waiver and heard none.
Don Carmichael moved to approve renewal of the waiver and Lisa Hessel seconded. The board approved the waiver renewal by roll‑call vote.
If the district’s submission is accepted by the state, schools in District 128 will continue to deliver simulator hours as part of the driver‑education program for a five‑year period.
