Board approves five-year tentative teachers’ agreement; union to vote

The Community High School District 128 Board of Education on April 28 voted to approve a tentative collective-bargaining agreement between the district and the Libertyville High School / Vernon Hills High School Federation of Teachers, Local 504 IFT/AFL-CIO covering July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2030.
The board’s approval sends the tentative agreement to the teachers’ bargaining unit for its ratification vote. Board members said the five-year term is the principal item they can publicly confirm while the union’s internal ratification is underway.
Board President Jim Batson asked for the motion to approve the agreement and Lisa Hessel made the motion; Don Carmichael seconded. The board took a roll-call vote and the motion carried.
Board members who participated in the roll call included Don Carmichael, Cara Drumke, Lisa Hessel, Midlesh Kotwal, Sonal Kulkarni, Jim Batson and Cara Benjamin. No member recorded a negative vote during that roll call.
District leaders thanked the administrative and union teams for working collaboratively on the contract. The board emphasized that final implementation depends on the union’s vote and subsequent administrative steps.
If the union ratifies, the five-year agreement will govern salaries, term dates and other contract provisions through the 2029–30 school year. The board did not release detailed contract provisions at the meeting because union ratification was still pending.
Board members said they would update the public after the union completes its ratification process.
