Martin County marks historic preservation month with tours, dedications and a District 1 open house

The month has a local focus this year, the hosts said, noting the county’s 100th anniversary reference on the program: “We are 100. This year, 2025, because we were born in 1925,” the hosts said on the show.
Podcast hosts Mac and Courtney listed historic properties and scheduled events that county preservation staff and volunteer groups will promote. Highlights they named include Captain Sewell’s House (tours on Wednesday, May 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.), musical performances at the Mansion At Tuckahoe (May 4 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., featuring the Melinda Alina band), continued interpretation at the House of Refuge and the restored log cabin, and a plaque designation for a one‑room schoolhouse in New Monrovia and Salerno during May.
Courtney said the Mansion At Tuckahoe will host a District 1 open house “for residents to come by and meet with different county departments that are having projects within the District 1 area,” and added, “Mister Vargas and Kathy will both be there,” noting the event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Hosts described additional sites they manage or promote, including the Martin County Courthouse (now used by the Arts Council), the Golden Gate Building, Mount Elizabeth (an archaeological midden), and the Stewart Welcome Arch. They said show notes for the episode will include links to lists showing which sites are on national, state and local historic registers.
