The Advisory Committee of the Marine and Environmental Resource Task Force agreed to reopen nominations for the John Mulholland stewardship award and voted to present the award to the nonprofit Friends of Little Estero Island.
Committee discussion reviewed the award’s history: it is named for former mayor John Mulholland and recognizes individuals, businesses or nonprofit organizations for voluntary work advancing awareness, education and preservation of the town’s natural resources. Committee members agreed to have the town’s public information officer distribute application materials and accept nominations from the public.
A committee member moved to recommend Friends of Little Estero Island for this year’s award; the motion was seconded and carried unanimously. Committee members praised the group’s fundraising and quick action to replace shorebird signage after storm damage. Staff said the group’s signs were constructed to FWC specifications and that the committee will publicize the award and the nomination process to board members and residents.
