Civil Service Commission removes 12 names from Sandusky fire certified list

The Sandusky Civil Service Commission voted May 1 to remove 12 names from the fire department's certified candidate list, Fire Chief D'Amico told the commission.
Chief D'Amico said the certified list originally had 42 names; he recommended removing 12 because six people had withdrawn themselves — either after a job offer or before interview — and other names were no longer current after hires. "We have, we have a list with 42 people on it, and we're looking to remove 12 of them right now," Chief D'Amico said. He told the commission five candidates have already been hired from the list and interviews had progressed through candidate 31.
The chief said there are no current openings; the most recent vacancy is expected to be filled May 9 by a candidate who has accepted and is scheduled to start. He added the department expects multiple retirements in 2027 and that promotions will follow those retirements. A commissioner moved to approve the recommendation to remove the 12 names, a second was recorded, and the motion carried.
Chief D'Amico said the commission does not need to act on each name individually and recommended removing them in a single action. Commission members discussed timing for the next meeting; staff said they will schedule a future meeting after completion of the lieutenant promotional assessment, likely in June or July.
The certified-list removals will update the department's hiring pools; any future hires will follow civil service procedures and be drawn from current certified lists.
