Delray Beach wins Blue Flag designation for third consecutive year

The Blue Flag program, run by the Foundation for Environmental Education based in Copenhagen, grants the label to beaches and marinas that meet more than 30 criteria covering environmental education, water quality, environmental management, safety and access. A city official said Delray is “very, very proud” to be a repeat recipient and credited city staff and volunteers for the result.
“We're here to celebrate the city of Delray Beach's Third award of Blue Flag Beach status. We're very, very proud of that,” the city official said during remarks. The official thanked the public works department, parks and recreation, ocean rescue, neighborhood and community services, and the office of sustainability, along with volunteers and partner groups including the BPOA and the Downtown Development Authority.
City speakers noted the award is difficult to earn. “Get this designation. There are 30 criteria you have to meet. That's not easy, and that's why there are so few beaches that have actually captured this award,” the city official said, adding Delray was one of three beaches in the continental United States holding Blue Flag status this season.
Representatives from the American Shore & Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA) congratulated Delray Beach, praising the city’s communication practices, ecosystem management and safety-focused events. An ASBPA representative said, “The city of Delray continues to exceed US standards in order to achieve this award,” and noted Palm Beach County became the first county this season to raise two Blue Flags.
Speakers also noted recent recognition by USA Today: last year Delray Beach was named Best Beach in Florida and was listed as a finalist again this year; one speaker urged residents to vote in the publication’s reader’s-choice contest. City remarks repeatedly framed the designation as part of a broader sustainability emphasis and local pride; the city official closed remarks by thanking staff and volunteers for the city’s “major accomplishment 3 years in a row.”
