District schedules public meetings for long‑range facility plan; staff report on roofing and parking repairs

Support services staff told the Cape Girardeau Board of Education on April 28 that public meetings for the district’s long‑range facility plan are scheduled for May 15 with two sessions at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to accommodate differing schedules.
The district will present the long‑range facility plan to the board for adoption in June, support services staff said. In the meantime the district is completing several small roofing repairs and making pothole repairs to parking lots; staff noted the local asphalt plant recently re‑opened after winter and that patching must wait for asphalt availability.
Support services staff also described how security video captured a tornado passing nearby and causing damage elsewhere, but they said Cape Girardeau schools escaped significant harm. Staff said cosmetic roof flashing damage from spring storms has been repaired and that no major insurance claims had been filed.
The report covered other operational items: participation in the DESE Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program will be renewed (CEP provides free breakfast and lunch eligibility districtwide) and the district anticipates the cost to offset CEP-related expenses will be about $80,000, down from an earlier figure of roughly $150,000 when the program was first adopted. The district’s transportation contract with Robinson is in its final year; staff warned that next year the district will post the contract for competitive bidding.
Support services staff asked the community to attend the May 15 meetings and to provide input for the final long‑range facility plan, which will include a 10‑year project list for smaller repairs and capital work.
