The Wakefield School Committee voted unanimously April 29 to approve the evaluation of Superintendent Douglas Lyons after committee members discussed the district's leadership, communication and operations.
"We have been very lucky to have the stability and the leadership of Doctor Lyons and his entire staff," School Committee member Tom Markham said during the discussion. Multiple committee members thanked Lyons and district leaders for steady leadership, noting the district's instructional and administrative continuity during a period of change.
Members also urged that future evaluation goals be tied more explicitly to instructional outcomes and the newly drafted Vision of a Graduate. One member suggested the evaluation could be better aligned with student assessment and school improvement plans: "moving forward if there's an opportunity for us to look at evaluations in light of the Vision of a Graduate ... integrate those into what our goals are," the member said.
Lyons acknowledged the feedback and thanked the committee. He named his administrative thought partners and noted the district will continue to focus on leadership development and succession planning.
Procedural note: a motion to approve the superintendent evaluation was made and seconded; the committee recorded a unanimous vote in favor of the evaluation during the April 29 open session. No further action was taken at the meeting.
