Parks staff told the committee the targeted site is a large grass area adjacent to the open shelter that was planted with prairie grasses about 15 to 20 years ago and has seen invasive species encroachment. The staff member said the site "should be a very simple burn" because it has minimal woody vegetation and that NES must submit a burn plan detailing staffing, methods, safety measures and notifications. The staff member added that "they can only burn when weather conditions are ideal."
The committee discussed public notice and safety; the presenting staff said the fire department will review and must approve the burn plan before any burn occurs. Alder Presley moved approval contingent on the Fire Department review; Alder De Lee seconded. Committee members present voted aye, and the recommendation will go to the full Common Council as a committee action.
Parks staff said the burn would occur sometime in May if conditions and approvals align. NES Ecological Services has previously conducted prairie burns in the community, according to staff remarks.
