Board approves addendum with Murfreesboro Police Department for SRO safes and camera access

The Murfreesboro City School Board on April 29 approved an addendum to its memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Murfreesboro Police Department to formalize two operational practices intended to support school safety.
According to the administration’s presentation, the addendum authorizes installation and use of secure, tamper-resistant safes in school buildings where School Resource Officers (SROs) are assigned. The safes are intended to store law-enforcement weapons and safety equipment; placement and access protocols will be subject to administrative oversight.
The addendum also sets terms under which Murfreesboro Police Department personnel, including the department’s Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), may access the district’s camera system. Presenters said there is no fiscal impact to the district because MPD will purchase equipment and the district will assist with installation coordination.
Captain Fanning of the Murfreesboro Police Department attended the meeting and the superintendent and board members described the SRO partnership as a critical school-safety deterrent. The board moved and seconded approval; the motion carried with no recorded opposition.
