Nora Allstead, president of the Farmersville Teachers Association and a teacher at Hester and Snowden Elementary Schools, urged the board and public to join a "Fight for Schools" rally planned for May 17 in Hanford to protest federal proposals she said could eliminate or shrink the U.S. Department of Education and remove tens of millions of dollars in funding from Tulare County schools.
Allstead told the board the California Teachers Association is coordinating county-level materials and that she expects a large turnout; she said CTA is compiling a district-by-district breakdown of the potential funding impact and that she would share Farmersville's figures when available. "Tulare County cannot afford to lose $180,000,000 in funding," Allstead said, adding that CTA is preparing more detailed, district-level numbers.
The rally will begin at Civic Park in Hanford with speakers and a march to Congressman David Valadao's office. Allstead said organizers had invited the congressman and that Dolores Huerta was tentatively scheduled to speak. She described logistics including shuttle service from Sierra Pacific High School and warned attendees that parking will be limited.
Allstead said the Department of Education needs reform but argued elimination or deep cuts would harm K–12 programs that rely on federal funding for CTE, food programs and other services. She invited board members, staff and community members to attend and to review CTA's forthcoming funding breakdown for Farmersville.
Board members listened and did not take action; several trustees later thanked principals for school presentations and noted district events that highlight local engagement.
