The Longview School District Board of Directors on March 24 reviewed a first reading that would move detailed graduation requirements from board policy into administrative procedure.
Administrators said moving procedural details into procedure would avoid repeated policy amendments whenever the Legislature or OSPI changes technical elements, such as acceptable graduation regalia or specific code citations. "That—larifies what the requirements are and the as all of the cross references in," an administrator said, describing the intent to reduce the number of times the board must amend policy for small legal adjustments.
The board and staff noted that the clean copy in the packet had some incorrect RCW citations; the superintendent said he would correct the legal references for the second reading. Board members asked for the procedure (the administrative document) to be shared when it is finalized so the public and staff can review the operational details.
No vote was taken; the item was carried forward to a second reading. Staff said they would return with a corrected clean copy and the proposed procedure language.
