San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools Ted Alejandre used remarks in April to spotlight student achievements across several county events, including the West End SELPA Art and Writing Showcase, the county multilingual recognition ceremony and a performing arts showcase at the California Theater of the Performing Arts.
Alejandre said the West End SELPA Art and Writing Showcase brought together students, educators and families "under the theme, Better Together," and noted the event has "for over 20 years" highlighted special education students from nine school districts in the county. "This showcase reinforced West End SELPA's commitment to inclusion, transition support, and community engagement," he said.
A parent who spoke during the remarks said, "It's really exciting for, like, the West End to kind of invite us for our teachers, for our school to include our kids. We don't know that our kids are gonna receive awards. We as parents, we children with special needs can attend this kind of activities. So it's very awesome when we're included. It is highly appreciated."
Alejandre also described the county's multilingual recognition program, saying the ceremony showcased "the winning essays of talented students whose words reflected the depth of their cultural understanding and linguistic skills" and noted a countywide winner received special recognition. "Congratulations to all of our awardees," he said.
On arts education, Alejandre highlighted the seventh annual Performing Arts Showcase at the California Theater of the Performing Arts, saying it "brought together more than 200 students for an unforgettable celebration of artistic excellence." A student performer said of being on stage, "Being in front of an audience is, of course, like a very daunting experience, but it is a way to showcase your talents and skills...it teaches you not only, like, life skills, but it teaches you confidence in your abilities."
Alejandre praised recipients of the Education Medal of Honor and Distinguished Service Award, saying recipients were "selected by an independent panel" and "exemplify what it means to put students first," and singled out a teacher from Fontana Unified School District honored for transforming dance education.
"Whether through art, language, leadership, or performance, we are committed to providing stages where every learner can discover their passions and shine," Alejandre said. "That's how we continue transforming lives through education."
