FCPS advisory committee plans summer curriculum review, adds charter-school representative to guidelines

The Family Life Advisory Committee for Frederick County Public Schools said it will use district funds this summer to review and update elementary health-education resources and that committee leaders plan to circulate orientation materials before the first meeting of the next school year.

Committee staff said they have funds available for summer curriculum writing and expect new resources to be rolled out to elementary teachers in the fall. Staff said the state law requires compliance with COMAR and state health-education frameworks; the committee plans a summer planning meeting to incorporate any new materials. The committee also noted that results from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey are not expected until 2026, and will not be available for this summer’s curriculum work.

The committee approved adding one representative from charter schools to the membership roster so the group will include representatives from 10 feeder schools plus a charter-school representative. Catherine Rich, who will contact committee members about renewals, told members that those who miss two meetings without notice will have their positions vacated per the guidelines. Staff said renewal and recruitment outreach will take place in May and June so the committee can finalize membership over the summer.

The committee discussed next year’s meeting cadence and said it will schedule four meetings to reduce leadership meeting congestion. Staff said they will send opening-of-year materials in early to mid-August and asked members to respond promptly to membership outreach.
