Board approves $4.04 million change order for Rosemond High Early College cafeteria

The Southern Kern Unified School District board approved a change order totaling $4,040,114.11 with Redallion Contracting Inc. for the new cafeteria at the Rosemond High Early College campus, district facilities staff said.
Facilities staff explained the bulk of the change order paid for additional concrete work behind the cafeteria on the west side to prevent erosion and runoff issues when the site receives rain, along with electrical adjustments and replacement of a protective device that was installed earlier. The facilities presenter said the original plans called for minimal concrete in the area but on inspection the district determined additional concrete and labor were needed to protect adjacent surfaces and reduce future maintenance risk.
Board members approved the change order by voice vote. At the meeting CEO Robert Herbert and other administrators noted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new cafeteria is planned for Friday and that the district previously sold bonds (approximately $20 million) to fund campus construction work.
District staff said the change order is intended to mitigate future costs by addressing drainage and equipment-protection issues now. The board approved the revision to the contract and authorized staff to proceed with the additional work.
