Clearwater library director: Beach Library restoration underway with March 2026 reopening possible

Library Director Jennifer told the Clearwater Library Advisory Board that the system is working with the Parks and Recreation Department and architect Williamson Decar to restore the Beach Library, which was damaged in Hurricane Helene.
Jennifer said the project is at an early stage and staff are coordinating on furniture, fixtures and flooring with the same architect the city is using for the rec center portion of the building. “Parks and Rec anticipates reopening the rec center and library probably in March of 2026,” Jennifer said, and added that date is a “worst-case scenario” and reopening could be sooner.
Jennifer said the restoration will involve determining FEMA reimbursement and state insurance coverage. She told the board staff are exploring ways to offer limited programming to the beach community before full reopening, such as near the pool area, but said transport and storage issues limit use of the system’s bike mobile for beach outreach.
On tourist access, Jennifer said the system offers temporary library cards for visitors. She also noted that the bike mobile currently is used primarily for coach and park events downtown because the vehicle cannot be transported easily to the beach on narrow, traffic-heavy roads.
No formal timeline or contract award was reported at the meeting. Jennifer said she plans to provide an updated report at the advisory board’s August meeting.
