BZA pulls expedited review of Laurel Street accessory structure for fuller hearing

Summary
The Board removed application 21285 (accessory structure at 1311 Laurel St NW) from expedited review and scheduled a full hearing for June 11 to allow Office of Planning, the ANC and neighbors time to review revised relief requests and ensure the correct self‑certification is before the board.
The Board of Zoning Adjustment removed application 21285, a self‑certified expedited application for a one‑story accessory structure at 1311 Laurel Street NW, from expedited review and scheduled a full hearing on June 11.
Chairman Fred Hill said there appeared to be discrepancies between the relief requested and the Office of Planning’s understanding and that the ANC had not had an opportunity to review the project. "I would rather have the applicant come back with the right relief, having the ANC and its neighbors with a complete record," Hill said.
Board member Kershawn Smith and Vice Chair Carl Blake supported pulling the case from expedited review so the applicant can coordinate with OP and the ANC and return with a revised self‑certification and clearer record. The secretary scheduled the hearing for June 11 in order to give the ANC time to review the materials and allow the applicant to amend filings as needed.
The board’s action does not decide the substantive merits of the accessory‑structure request; it postpones a final ruling to permit fuller review and public notice of any changed relief.
