Board approves $33.76 million school nutrition fund for FY26

The Knox County Board of Education on April 29 approved the fiscal year 2026 school nutrition fund budget at the major category level for $33,760,000.
Board members asked whether the budget covers free breakfasts and lunches. District staff said some schools are identified to receive free breakfast and lunch under a separate formula; the approved budget covers regular paid meals for students, faculty and staff who choose to purchase them and accounts for increased costs for food and delivery.
“Within increasing cost, with not only food but delivery, it's just something that we had to address,” said Dr. Adams, a district staff member. Staff said the budget is reviewed every three to five years and is comparable to surrounding districts.
The motion to approve the nutrition budget was made by Ms. Christie, seconded by Reverend Butler, and carried after a voice vote with no recorded opposition.
