Board approves fully accessible Hawkins playground; Spencer PTO donation discussion deferred

The Brighton Area Schools Board of Education voted 7-0 to approve a new playground at Hawkins Elementary with a full rubber safety surface and full accessibility features.
Mr. Stall, a board member and the motion’s mover, said the full-rubber option would ensure 100% accessibility for students and argued the district should prefer an accessible surface even though the hybrid option reduced immediate cost. “I think it’s important for our district to have a 100% accessible playground for the children in the community,” Stall said during debate.
Spencer Elementary: the board considered a separate donation from the Spencer PTO for roughly $60,665 to add equipment at Spencer Elementary. Board members and administrators debated whether to accept that donation as proposed (with a wood-chip surface) or to pursue a fully accessible installation paid in partnership with the district. Concerns included equity across elementary schools, the potential for future students with mobility needs, and the timing required for summer installation. Because trustees wanted more information about whether the donated equipment and proposed surfacing would meet accessibility goals — and whether the PTO would accept a district-funded upgrade to a fully accessible surface — the board chair withdrew the motion and directed staff to return the item to the for-future-action list.
What passed: the Hawkins project passed 7-0 (motion to approve the option with full rubber padding; mover Mr. Stall; support by Ms. Marks). The board’s action on Spencer was withdrawn and will be revisited after the district and PTO clarify scope, surfacing options and timing.
Context: administrators said the capital master plan includes a playground line item and that the district has been collecting survey feedback on playgrounds among other facility priorities. Trustees noted one building (Hawkins) will receive a fully accessible installation now; others suggested the district develop a consistent approach for accessibility across all elementary sites rather than approving one-off installations.
Public input at the meeting included several speakers urging investments in music and performing-arts facilities, which board members said are reflected elsewhere in the capital master plan.
