Board holds first reading of spring policy updates to align with Michigan ESTA and USDA guidance

The Rockford Board of Education conducted a first reading Monday of a package of spring policy updates recommended by Neola, the district's policy vendor.
Dr. Corey Wilson-Crawford, who leads the district’s policy work, told board members the packet includes multiple policies that revise leave-of-absence language to comply with Michigan’s Earned Sick Time Act (ESTA). “These 3 policies kind of outline our district getting in line with ESTA,” he said, noting the revisions address different groups of employees and therefore may appear repetitive in numbering.
Dr. Wilson-Crawford also highlighted an update to the district’s wellness policy (policy language reflecting nutrition guidance) that aligns the district with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate graphic rather than the older food-pyramid representation. He said the change is largely visual and will not change portion sizes served in schools.
Another recommended change is to rescind a standalone transportation-for-field-trips policy and consolidate that content into the district’s Field and Other District-Sponsored Trips policy so transportation rules are in the same place as trip policies. The presenter said international travel will be presented separately to the board for approval going forward.
Dr. Wilson-Crawford said the board and community may review the proposed language over the coming month; second reading and a request for approval is expected at the May board meeting.
No formal vote occurred Monday; the item was presented for first reading and board members were invited to ask questions before a May action.
