Board approves furniture, equipment and security contracts; staff-appreciation resolution adopted

The Rockford Board of Education on Monday approved several procurement items and a staff-appreciation resolution as part of new business and consent items.
The board approved a package of furniture purchases that officials said will complete outfitting new and renovated classrooms across the district. Administrators reported cost savings on a prior Roguewood order — originally $817,788 — that was reduced to $334,400 after inventory reallocation, a savings the district applied to Parkside and other purchases. The board approved $226,258.68 for Parkside and early-childhood furniture and later voted to approve $342,803.36 for remaining middle-school elective classroom furniture. District staff said installations are expected to be complete before the start of the 2025–26 school year.
Separately, the board approved a $39,798 purchase of strength-and-conditioning equipment for North Rockford Middle School, funded from proceeds of the district’s 2019 bond. The equipment is intended for a new weight-training class planned for 2025–26 and to create parity with equipment at East Rockford Middle School.
The board also approved a three-year security-technology contract with Parkway Electric of Holland, Michigan. The contract covers alarm systems, video monitoring and access control work and was selected after a competitive bid process that evaluated labor rates, material markups and expected future projects.
Other approvals included the routine consent agenda (presentation bills and personnel items), adoption of a resolution designating the week of May 5, 2025, as staff appreciation week and Tuesday, May 6, 2025, as staff appreciation day, and the board’s return of a KIASB (Kent Intermediate Association of School Boards) ballot that listed a single nominee.
Board remarks during the furniture discussion highlighted sequencing of orders and an effort to leverage existing district inventory. “We were able to go around to every single building and capitalize on some of the inventory that was in the buildings,” said Mister Ray, who presented the furniture memo. Chris Meeser of Communication by Design, who spoke during the security discussion, described the procurement approach: the prior contract “allowed us to not only lock in unit pricing on materials for those future projects” and the district used the same approach for the current RFP.
All items presented for a board vote were approved by voice vote; the meeting transcript records motions and “all in favor” voice votes but does not list roll-call tallies.
