Board accepts donations for therapy dog, senior meal assistance and playground project

The Sylvania Schools Board on April 25 accepted multiple gifts and grants: a $500 donation from Directions Credit Union designated for care of the Arbor Hills therapy dog “Storm,” a $2,000 check from the Masonic Lodge to reduce seniors’ negative food balances, and a donation from the Stranahan Parent Teacher Association to support playground equipment and installation at Stranahan Elementary.
The $2,000 Masonic Lodge gift was presented earlier in the day; district staff recorded the donation and acknowledged a photo opportunity. The superintendent said the donation will be divided so that senior students with outstanding food balances see a reduction in debt.
The playground project will be installed this spring or early summer and includes planned community build days; the district said the vendor will oversee construction and volunteers are wanted. The superintendent directed interested community members to the Stranahan Elementary website and a QR code to sign up for volunteer shifts and find project details.
Board members thanked donors and approved acceptance of the gifts by roll call. One board member asked whether the senior-balance donation covered all seniors; staff said it does not cover all balances but will reduce large debts and be divided equally among eligible students.
