Northview student to have artwork displayed in U.S. Capitol after district recognition

The Sylvania Schools Board of Education on April 25 commended Northview High School student Caleb Meshevsky after his artwork, “Outside Inn,” won first place in the Ohio Ninth Congressional District Invitational High School Art Exposition and will be displayed for one year in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol.

The recognition was part of the superintendent’s report, which also noted that the district is finalizing a mailed district digest with a financial update, board message and highlights of student accomplishments that the superintendent said should arrive in households within about two to two-and-a-half weeks.

An art teacher from Northview described Meshevsky’s progress during a brief presentation: “He found a home in the Art Room and he flourished,” the teacher said, noting the student had struggled early in high school but developed in the department. The board presented the recognition and invited Meshevsky’s grandmother and Northview art teachers Lauren, Terry and Ryan to accept the commendation at the meeting.

Board members and staff encouraged community members to attend the district art show and a closing reception on May 7, where Meshevsky’s work and other seniors’ pieces will be displayed. The teacher who spoke urged attendees to visit the show and said reproductions of selected work will be available.

The superintendent’s report also listed recent and upcoming student performances and banquets across the district and highlighted a National Honor Society induction and several high ACT/SAT results listed on the meeting agenda. The superintendent recommended board accommodations and recognition for the students listed.

The Board approved the accommodations and recognitions on a voice/roll call vote during the meeting.
