A staff member from Plano Fire Rescue said the device performs basic monitoring functions — taking vital signs and EKGs — and provides defibrillation capability, giving crews more clinical information before and after hospital arrival. “Plano Fire Rescue is using a new life saving device called the LIFEPAK 35,” the staff member said.
The department said the LIFEPAK 35 allows paramedics and EMTs to view a patient’s heart rhythm while compressions continue. The staff member explained that, before this technology, crews had to pause chest compressions to analyze the rhythm; the department said the new monitor lets them continue compressions during rhythm analysis.
Plano Fire Rescue said the devices are on all engines, trucks and ambulances in the field. The staff member characterized the change as improving the information available to clinicians treating patients in cardiac arrest, both on scene and during transport to the hospital.
