Bike-shop representative urges bicyclists to replace helmets every five years and check fit

Willagalli said the manufacturing date code inside a helmet indicates its age and that "5 years is the industry standard for, lifetime life of a helmet." He advised riders to check for cracks or damage after a crash or if a helmet has been roughly stored.
On fit, Willagalli recommended placing helmet straps "down just, below and in front of your ear" and positioning the front of the helmet about "2 fingers above your eyebrows." He said the side buckle should be snug enough that you can fit "2 fingers, 3 fingers here" and noted many helmets now include a rear dial to fine-tune fit so the helmet does not move while riding.
Willagalli encouraged shopping locally so riders can try helmets on for shape and comfort and to pick colors that match gear. "When you get something new, you're more apt to go use it," he said.
