School Committee approves FY26 operating budget submission and refers it to city; reconsideration fails

The Everett School Committee on April 29 voted unanimously to accept and refer the school department’s fiscal year 2026 operating budget to the city administration.
Superintendent Bill Hart presented the FY26 budget at the meeting and requested favorable action. The package the committee accepted and referred included an operating total of $136,940,205 plus $5,214,215 for special education transportation and city chargebacks in the amount of $35,771,530.
Committee roll-call recorded a unanimous 9–0 vote to accept and forward the budget to the city. After that vote a committee member moved for reconsideration (a procedural motion that would have kept the matter under committee control); that reconsideration motion was seconded and brought to roll call and was defeated by the committee, leaving the referral to city hall in place.
Why it matters: The referral sends the district’s proposed budget to the city administration and is the formal step that brings school funding requests into the municipal budget and appropriation process. Hart and committee members noted the state budget process (House and Senate) may alter the district’s final state aid figures and that any additional state funds would be reflected later in the municipal process.
No changes to the dollar amounts were adopted by the committee at this meeting; the committee’s action was to accept the proposed FY26 operating budget and to forward it to city officials for consideration and final appropriation.
