Dr. Byrne, the Rye City School District superintendent, opened the April 29 meeting by noting the district—s recently renovated softball field and community outreach about the budget and artificial intelligence.
"The field looks absolutely terrific," Dr. Byrne said, and he credited Facilities Director Rob Camigliano and Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations Gabriella Peruccio for completing the project quickly. He said the district posted information from a parent university on AI presented by Dr. Murray, Dr. Sasson and the technology staff and that a forthcoming district AI handbook will be shared with families.
Dr. Byrne also summarized the district—s budget roadshow: staff visited Osborne School PTO and the Rye Rotary, met with Community Synagogue and planned additional public events, with videos and presentations posted on a dedicated page of the district website. He reminded the public that the district—s budget and trustee election will be held May 20, with polls open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the middle school gym.
The board approved its consent agenda by a 6-0 vote with one absence. Items approved on the consent agenda that Dr. Byrne called out included:
- An award of the public information officer RFP to Sarah Derman to continue district communications.
- Gifts to district schools: $6,500 from Milton School to support the Mangum recess program; $6,500 from a PTO to support buses for field trips; $12,000 from the Osborne PTO to support field trips; and a reported gift of $491,986 from the Midland PTO for new playground equipment tied to the school's building addition.
- Personnel approvals including the appointment of Emily Troopia as a 0.7 physical-education teacher at Midland School and several hires to support the district—s ESY (Extended School Year) program.
Dr. Byrne also noted an approved agreement for an AI workshop with Diane Yokani for teachers and said the district would continue parent- and staff-facing programming on AI.
Board communications included an upgrade to the Milton and Oakland Beach Avenue crosswalk system that will allow a double cross with all lights stopping traffic when the button is pressed; the board thanked the city—s traffic and pedestrian-safety staff and the Milton PTO for advocacy.
The board announced its next meeting, the budget hearing, for May 6 and then adjourned into executive session.
No policies were changed during the public portion of the April 29 meeting; the consent agenda carried routine operational items, gifts and personnel actions.
