Board approves high-school credit-bearing English as a New Language course

Warrick County School Corp approved adding an English as a New Language high-school course for 2025–26 that will bear credit and require teacher certification in both English language arts and EL instruction.
The Warrick County School Corp board voted unanimously April 28 to add a credit-bearing high-school course titled English as a New Language for the 2025–26 school year.
Director of Learning Jason Fisher told the board the course is intended for high-school students who need more intensive English-language instruction than pull-out supports provide; it will count as English language arts credit while delivering targeted English-language instruction.
Fisher said teachers for the course must hold both English language arts certification and EL (English Learner) certification and that the class will help newcomer students — those who score low on the WIDA English proficiency assessment — earn English credits while receiving language instruction. The board moved and approved the request as presented.
Motion and vote: The motion to approve the new course was made by Mr. Mosby and seconded by Mr. France; a roll call vote recorded all board members present as voting yes.
