Board approves 10¢ school meal price increase and raises milk punch-card cost

The Luxemburg-Casco School District Board of Education approved a modest increase to student meal prices at its April meeting, moving K–6 meals to $2.85 and grades 7–12 meals to $3.10, and raising the milk punch-card from $10 to $11.25 for 25 punches.
Food service director Dan (last name not specified) told the board the change is a 10¢ increase and is intended to keep the district ahead of rising milk prices; he said milk costs could reach 41–42¢ per carton if current trends continue. He also said the district's meal fund balance remained healthy at about $150,000 but warned that changes to SNAP and Medicaid — both key inputs for direct-certification of free meals — could reduce the number of families who automatically qualify.
“We just want to get ahead of that before we end up spending more on milk than we are taking in,” the director said during discussion recorded in the minutes. The board approved the pricing change by voice vote; the chair announced “Motion carried.”
Board members discussed whether the district should consider including meals for staff on full days (an approach some districts have used), but auditors and accounting rules previously led Luxemburg-Casco to stop a similar practice because it had to be reported as taxable income.
The board's action also included approval to increase the cost of a milk punch card (25 punches) to $11.25. The board approved the motion by voice vote.
