At an April 29 agenda‑setting work session, Thurston County staff said the Board of County Commissioners will consider a contract award to South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity for $560,000 to build 14 affordable homeownership units in Tumwater.
County Public Health and Social Services Director Jen Freiheit told the board the money would come from the county’s local home fund — the one‑tenth of 1% sales tax dedicated to affordable housing — and that the funding requires a portion of supported units be retained or sold at or below 60% of area median income (AMI). Freiheit said three of the 14 units will be secured at that affordability level for at least 20 years.
Alex Pierce, the county’s housing program manager, joined Freiheit during the briefing and answered procedural questions. Commissioners asked where the units would be built; staff said the site is on Halverson Lane in Tumwater. Freiheit said the project came through the county’s 2024 request‑for‑proposals process and is now ready for contracting.
No formal board action was taken during the work session; staff indicated the contract will be on the May 6 business meeting agenda for formal consideration.
If approved at the business meeting, county staff will return with contract documents for execution and said they will provide any additional public details required by the contracting process.
