Brazosport ISD board approves 2026–27 instructional calendar that ends before Memorial Day

The Brazosport ISD Board of Trustees voted Monday to adopt Instructional Calendar Draft A for the 2026–27 school year, a schedule the district presented as closely matching the current calendar and finishing the school year the week before Memorial Day.
District staff presented two options developed with input from principals, cabinet members and representative campus committees. Calendar A holds to a fall start around Aug. 12 and has 81 fall days and 87 spring days; Calendar B would have finished later but included a February break. The calendar committee preferred Calendar A by 71.4%, the district improvement committee (DEIC) preferred it by 57.1%, and campus improvement committees (CEICs) preferred it by 80%.
During the presentation, the district’s calendar lead noted the committees aimed to prioritize quality instruction, balanced semesters and finishing before Memorial Day when possible. The presenter also warned the legislature was considering bills that could alter local calendar flexibility: House Bill 1209 (reported in the meeting as a bill that could require 175 days) and Senate Bill 2928 (a proposal to require classes to begin the third Wednesday in August). The district said it would monitor any legislative changes and noted the district operates under a District of Innovation (DOI) that currently allows reporting by minutes rather than days.
Board action: The board motion to approve Calendar A was made by Mr. Reinhart and seconded by Ms. Quayor; the motion passed by voice vote.
Discussion vs. decision: Trustees asked clarifying questions about how minutes vs. days work under the DOI and expressed support for finishing instruction before Memorial Day to reduce disruption near state testing. Public comment on the calendar was invited; none was made before the vote.
Why it matters: The calendar determines start and end dates for staff and students and affects planning for families, campus staffing and testing schedules. Committee and campus inputs drove the recommendation; the board approved the calendar to provide families and staff more than a year of advance notice.
