Evanston committee approves transit funding resolution with language added for ETHS students

Council Member Harris moved the resolution and Council Member Kelly seconded. Harris proposed and read an amendment to the resolution's recitals, adding language requested by Evanston Township High School about the school district's students and their reliance on public transit. "Whereas Evanston Township High School, the city's only public high school serving more than 3,500 students does not offer yellow school bus transportation," Harris read, adding that "hundreds of students rely on CTA Pace and other public transit services as a daily lifeline to access school, extracurricular activities, jobs, and essential resources," language intended to underscore equitable access to education.
Council Member Kelly seconded the amendment; the committee approved the change and then approved the underlying resolution as amended. The committee did not specify funding amounts or sponsor legislation in the meeting record.
Committee members said the amendment was submitted at the request of Evanston Township High School and that the language was circulated in a memorandum from City Manager Stowe earlier in the day. The item will move to the full Evanston City Council for final consideration.
