District staff outlines draft verification of graduation requirements and notes ethnic-studies requirement for class of 2029

District staff presented a draft “verification of graduating requirements” covering the classes of 2020 through 2026 and said a broader update will include later cohorts through 2029.
Isaac Curtis, a district staff member, told the board the document is conditional and will be revised to add the classes for 2027–2029 in a future update. Curtis said page six of the draft corrects a wording issue and that page seven lists graduation requirements by cohort.
Staff said the class of 2027 includes an alternative option for the health requirement but that the total credit requirement remains unchanged. Staff said the 2029 graduating class will include a new ethnic-studies requirement, to be delivered in ninth grade under English as a replacement rather than an additional credit.
Curtis said the verification document will be revised and presented to the board the following week and staff hope the board will approve the updated document together with the district’s LCAP in June. Board members asked clarifying questions about which year the changes apply to and whether credits required would change; staff answered that credits remain at the district’s stated total and that ethnic studies will replace an existing block in ninth-grade English rather than increase total credits.
No formal vote on the graduation verification document was recorded during the meeting.
