Birmingham Community Charter High District awarded $490,000 LADWP emissions grant to electrify maintenance fleet

The Birmingham Community Charter High District reported that it has been awarded a $490,000 Community Emission Reduction Grant from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP).
District staff said the grant will be used to replace gas-powered grounds and maintenance equipment with electric models, including hand tools, lawn mowers, tractors and some mobile lighting towers, and to install supporting infrastructure. Staff said the award requires the district to finalize a work plan, execute a formal agreement with LADWP, and submit quarterly metrics for reimbursement as milestones are met.
Staff noted the LADWP program is a competitive fund of $20 million that issues awards between $100,000 and $500,000 for projects in targeted districts and that recipients have three years to complete projects. The district applied for the 2024 round and said it met eligibility requirements including nonprofit or public-agency status, geographic eligibility, and project plans for greenhouse-gas reductions.
District staff said the next steps are to finalize inventory and purchase plans for replacement equipment, execute the agreement with LADWP and begin milestone reporting. Staff characterized the award as “very exciting.”
Board members and staff did not take a formal vote during the meeting on executing the grant agreement; staff described the award letter as notification to proceed and said contract documents and reimbursement milestones will follow.
Background: LADWP’s Community Emission Reduction Grant program targets projects that reduce local air pollution and greenhouse gases and may require compliance with California Air Resources Board rules and other state requirements. Staff said the district will track invoices and apply for reimbursement as project milestones are met.
