Putnam County updates four code-enforcement cases; one dismissed, others extended or tabled

Staff member Jordan Jack presented four property compliance cases during the commission’s April 29 meeting and recommended actions after recent inspections.

Case 2024-18 at 3470 C Tays Valley Road in Hurricane showed substantial improvement after a 90-day extension; Jordan recommended dismissing the case and the commission voted to dismiss it. Case 2024-03 at 261 Poindexter Road was described as partly remediated but complicated by a recent tax-auction sale; staff recommended tabling further enforcement to monitor whether the owner redeems the property during the 18-month statutory redemption period, and the commission voted to table the case.

Case 2024-21 at 47 Fifth Avenue North in Hometown had visible cleanup and the landowner plans to use a community solid-waste cleanup in June; the commission approved a 60-day extension to allow further progress. For case 2024-30 at 774 Hackett’s Branch in Hurricane, staff reported an unlawful-detainer action filed in magistrate court (case number 25-M40C-00104) but that the occupant had not been served; commissioners authorized staff member Larry to accompany the process server to assist service and to bring the matter back to the commission once service is completed or further action is possible.

Jack described the properties and inspections, noting one owner inherited property with large, heavy agricultural equipment and limited means to clean it up. Commission actions included motions to dismiss, extend, or table each case as presented; votes were taken by voice and recorded in the minutes.
