Policy committee chair Miss Crasco said the district adopted a full-committee review process for updates provided by a professional policy alert service and that the policies presented were largely mandated changes. One of the items discussed in detail was a new spectator code of conduct for interscholastic events required by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).
The NJSIAA-required policy provides districts a set of options for disciplining spectators who display unsportsmanlike conduct at away athletic events; the district selected options that permit suspension from subsequent home events and that allow any remaining suspension to carry over into the first home event of the next school year if the season ends before the suspension is served. The policy committee said the athletic director had reviewed the options and recommended tailored language for local implementation.
Committee members urged other board members to review the full text before second readings. "If you read a policy and you have questions, reach out to the administration to clarify questions before we do second reads," a board member said during the meeting. Board members also noted the policy alerts are categorized as mandated, recommended or suggested and that the administration will circulate highlighted changes for questions before final adoption.
