Mission — Organizers of Mission’s first annual Earth Day 5K said the event was sold out, with 155 participants taking part to raise funds and awareness for local beautification and education efforts.
Organizers framed the run as both a health and community event. "This is our first ever 5 k, and we're hoping to make this a yearly tradition, make it bigger every year. It's kind of just a way for us to raise awareness to our community, a way for us to raise funds to continue beautification projects throughout the city," Organizer said.
Event emcee opened the gathering with a welcome to attendees. "Hey, Mission, and welcome to the first annual Earth Day 5 ks, where the community has gathered together to keep Mission beautiful," the Event emcee said.
A committee member described the group’s emphasis on education and promoting healthy activity. "This morning, our objective really was to get people to invite to come out here, run, be healthy, because we believe that's beautiful. Staying healthy, staying active. And a little bit about our committee is we're really focused on just education. We're focused providing really beauty within the city," the Committee member said.
Organizer said the run sold out and quantified participation: "We had a sold out event. We had 155, participants come out and run for the good cause today." The Organizer also said the group sometimes stages similar events around hurricane season: "Usually have this right before hurricane season and then after hurricane season. We try to have it twice a year." The Organizer added that the group had coordinated a tire-collection effort with a local development council: "And also we came up at the lower development council, for the tire collection. Thank you everybody for coming out and supporting us. We hope to see you guys again next year."
Organizers said they plan to hold future runs and other activities to continue fundraising and community education around beautification projects.
