Board approves $12,600 to convert Human Services Center restrooms to employee-only

The Story County Board of Supervisors approved $12,600 on April 29 to convert selected restrooms at the Human Services Center to employee-only access for safety and accessibility reasons.
Jody Brogdon, director of facilities, told the board the work would create a secure employee-access area by building a partition wall and adding a controlled door with keyless access. Brogdon said the building meets required restroom guidelines and explained occupancy calculations: "Basically the occupancy load of the entire facility is 200 people which equates to we would need 3 water closets per gender. And, we currently have 9 for females and 6 for males." He said removing certain screening partitions that currently impede ADA access is already scheduled and that some floor patching would be done in-house.
Facilities proposed a hybrid approach using county staff and outside contractors for the wall, door framing, electrical and access control work. The board voted unanimously to approve the expenditure.
Why it matters: supervisors said the change addresses safety and ADA access issues at a public building and allows the county to control employee-only access while maintaining required restroom counts for the facility.
