Watuppa Rowing Club gets yearlong extension as buoyed course readies regattas and youth programs

The Watuppa Rowing Club told the Community Preservation Committee it needs a one-year extension to finish a phased installation of a six-lane, 2,000-meter race course and to expand modular dock capacity for hosting regattas and adaptive rowing.
Paul Cloutier, board chair, and Jeffrey Soars, director of rowing, said the buoy-and-cable course infrastructure must be installed in stages because a single specialized installer serves the region and the rowing season is short. The club has already installed base infrastructure and buoys and planned regattas were delayed by weather.
Soars said remaining funds would mainly support additional modular dock segments to speed boat launches at events and to make docks accessible for adaptive-rowing participants. The club noted year-round free youth programs (about 26 regular participants and more scheduled for summer) and partnerships with after-school STEM-to-Stern programming and local schools.
Committee members praised the project’s community benefit and approved a one-year extension to complete purchases and installation, with the club agreeing to coordinate communications with neighbors and share event schedules in advance.
