Elyria’s committees on Monday authorized an agreement with the Ohio Department of Transportation to purchase road salt for the 2025–26 season, not to exceed 9,000 tons.
The director presenting the item said the city will order 9,000 tons to restock after a year in which the city ordered 6,000 tons and needed additional deliveries. "We're gonna be ordering, we've ordered 9,000 tons," the director said. He added that the city does not yet have a final price from ODOT and must commit to quantities before ODOT posts pricing; the city typically must place its order by early May under the ODOT procurement timetable.
Committee members discussed how purchase estimates are set; one member suggested using a multi-year average rather than relying only on the previous season. The director said the city sometimes orders based on past season usage and noted the commodity nature of salt can limit multi-year contracting. A committee member asked about the source of salt and referenced Lake Erie/Cleveland mines; staff said that the Cleveland mine is again operating, which should help availability.
