Jackson County officials discussed a draft outreach letter to private landowners who host pioneer cemeteries and approved an appointment to the county’s Pioneer Cemetery Commission at the April 29 board meeting.
A county staff member described simplifying the letter’s language to inform landowners of their maintenance responsibilities, the need to allow county access with notice, and the county’s willingness to assist — for example by supplying materials, offering a volunteer work day, or providing guidance. The staff member said the letter would not demand access without notice and that the county would normally visit only with landowner permission or presence.
The board also approved a nomination to the Pioneer Cemetery Commission. Supervisors moved and seconded to appoint Alice Durrell to fill a vacant seat; her term will expire Dec. 31, 2027. The motion carried by voice vote.
Board members discussed sending a courtesy letter originating from the county, and suggested the county attorney or auditor be involved in finalizing the wording. The board directed staff to prepare and send a single courteous letter and to provide a copy to the board chair for signature.
