The Board of County Commissioners voted to recognize the La Cañada de los Alamos Community Association as an official community organization, giving the group formal standing under the county’s sustainable land development code. Staff presented the application and recommended approval after reviewing the association’s application packet and proposed boundary map.
La Cañada de los Alamos is a small, traditional community of about 421 residents in Commission District 4; the association’s application proposed using the U.S. Census designated-place boundary to define its area. Staff said using the census boundary would help county planners rely on consistent demographic data when doing studies for the area. The county’s rules for community organizations provide rights including notice and the opportunity to submit recommendations on discretionary development, participation in capital improvement processes, and legal standing in quasi-judicial hearings.
Residents from La Cañada spoke in support of recognition; they described wildfire vulnerability, trail and access concerns (including unauthorized bike trails in headwaters), and a desire to coordinate with county staff and the U.S. Forest Service. Commissioners asked about the group’s outreach and representation; staff said the ordinance does not require a formal constituent vote for recognition but staff verified a good-faith community organizing effort and canvassing. The commission approved the resolution unanimously.
Following the vote, staff will note the association as an official county community organization and provide the group with the rights and notice procedures established in the county code. Members said they hope the designation helps them coordinate on wildfire prevention, public-lands access and local planning with county and federal partners.
