Union County to allow in-calendar retesting for most grades after DPI rule change

Union County Public Schools officials told the district Curriculum Committee April 30 that changes at the state Department of Public Instruction will let most retesting for students who scored “not proficient” occur during the regular school year rather than after it.
Dr. Tyson, a district staff member, said the district had originally required remediation and retesting to occur outside the academic calendar beginning June 9, but “there has been some changes in DPI, and they have made some provisions to allow our schools to retest not proficient students either after the school year as we had originally approved or within the testing window as it is currently in place.”
The district plans to permit elementary and middle schools to retest students within the last 10 days of the school year. At the high school level, students identified as not proficient after the first semester may retest in the last five days of the school year; because the district must wait on English II scored gridded responses, which “are typically delayed up to 72 hours,” high schools will also have the option to provide remediation and retesting outside the academic calendar if needed.
The committee received the information as a staff update and voted to forward the matter to the full school board for consideration. The committee chair asked for and received a motion to send the item to the full board; the motion passed by voice vote, 4-0.
The presentation was framed as an informational update and did not include a district policy change at the meeting. Committee members asked no substantive policy amendments; staff said they had consulted principals and would allow building-level decisions within the guidance outlined by DPI.
Committee members and staff indicated this is a change in operational timing rather than a change to who is eligible for retesting or to assessment content. The district did not provide an exact date for any final administrative procedures; staff said high schools may use both in-window and out-of-calendar options depending on test scoring and remediation needs.
The committee directed staff to send the item to the full board; no additional conditions, funding decisions, or implementation timelines were decided at the committee meeting.
