Beloit School Board elects officers, president to name legislative liaison

The Beloit School District Board of Education held an organizational meeting and elected officers, including Tia Johnson as board president and Brian Nichols as vice president, and approved a motion assigning the legislative liaison role to the board president rather than the policy committee chair.
The board opened nominations for president and, after voting by ballot, “Tia Johnson was voted in president,” board staff announced. After the election the board proceeded with nominations and votes for vice president, treasurer, clerk, parliamentarian and secretary. Brian Nichols was selected vice president, Tom Hankins was confirmed as treasurer, Juan Romero was acclamated as board clerk, Tom Hankins was elected parliamentarian, and Michelle Schope was elected board secretary.
The board also addressed an internal policy conflict over who appoints the legislative liaison. Board member Megan Miller said the district’s policy manual contains two conflicting policies: an older policy (Policy 1‑54) that assigns the liaison to the policy committee chair and a more recent policy (Policy 1‑43) that places the duty with the board president. Board member Brian Nichols moved “that we follow policy 1‑43, and the legislative liaison is handled by the board president,” a motion seconded by Miller; the board approved the motion unanimously. The motion effectively waives the older policy for the current appointment and the board directed the policy committee to review the inconsistency.
Superintendent Dr. Garrison presented several superintendent appointments and the board accepted volunteers for advisory roles and committee chairs: policy committee chair Brian Nichols and members Tom Hankins and Juan Romero; the Teaching, Learning, and Equity committee chaired by Joanne Rue with members Megan Miller and Juan Romero; and Business Operations & Finance chaired by Tom Hankins with members Brian Nichols and Amy Levy. The board also approved agency and superintendent appointments including a CESA 2 representative and committee representatives accepted by the named board members.
The reorganizational meeting ended after the slate of officers and committee assignments were confirmed.
