Board approves Bachelor of Science in Nutrition at KU Edwards Campus

The Kansas Board of Regents approved the University of Kansas’ proposal to offer a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition at the Edwards Campus in Overland Park, a program KU officials said is intended to serve the eastern portion of Kansas and the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Provost Vikram Meyer presented the proposal and said the degree is intended to create a local pipeline for graduate nutrition programs at the KU Medical Center. Stuart Day, dean of the School of Professional Studies, told Regents the program is workforce oriented and modeled on similar undergraduate nutrition degrees at peer Midwestern universities.
Day listed comparable programs at Iowa State University, the University of Missouri–Columbia, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Colorado State University, Metropolitan State University of Denver, the University of Northern Colorado, Oklahoma State University and the University of Central Oklahoma. He said the KU program is primarily designed as a transfer and workforce pathway for students in the region.
Board members asked about distinctions between a nutrition degree and a degree labelled dietetics; Day replied there is considerable overlap and that program emphases vary by campus, with some programs offering more food‑science content and others more health‑science coursework.
A motion to approve the bachelor’s program was made, seconded and adopted by vocal ayes. The transcript does not record a numerical roll‑call tally.
