At the April 28 meeting of the Templeton Board of Health, staff summarized results from a Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection inspection of the town landfill cap and outlined steps to address a beaver-related water issue.
The director told the board that MassDEP’s inspection showed the landfill cap is “in really good condition,” with solid grass cover and a vent that was replaced. She said the town is working on a water-elevation problem caused by beaver activity near the cap and has arranged for a trapper to assess and provide an estimate for work around the site.
Town staff will also coordinate with Templeton Municipal Water and the Department of Public Works to clear a swale and remove brush growth. The director said the water department has equipment that should reduce costs and that mowing of the cap will continue twice a year with the current vendor.
The director said she will follow up with MassDEP Central Region Section Chief Mr. McQuade and that monitoring wells and other long-term oversight have been discussed with Mark Popham. No formal vote was taken; the board heard the inspection results and staff plans for remediation and maintenance.
