The finance committee accepted grant‑funded streetscape elements for the Southtown district, approving installation of a 20‑foot illuminated gateway entrance pillar at South Court and Smith, 15‑foot pillars at South Court and Lafayette, and 16 planter tubs in the South Court tree lawn.
Andrew and representatives from Main Street Medina described the items as part of a Southtown plan adopted in 2023. George of Main Street Medina said stakeholders — business and property owners in the area — were involved in the design process and “they kind of approve of the look and style.” He described the finish as Korton steel, which develops a darker patina after exposure to the elements.
Why it matters: the elements are intended to implement the Southtown vision for place making and to encourage future repeat installations on nearby streets. Kimberly, a committee member, said the funding came from state OTCIF money drawn from ARPA leftover funds; she also noted that George had met with legislators in Columbus to secure the award and that failing to execute the grant project could reflect poorly on those efforts.
Timing and maintenance: George said the grant ends next June and that the pieces are expected to be ordered in July with installation in the fall. Committee discussion noted city staff (streets/engineering) will assist with installation and that long‑term planter maintenance will rely on a public‑private partnership and volunteer planting efforts.
Outcome: A motion to accept the elements and proceed with the project passed by voice vote. Staff and Main Street Medina will coordinate ordering, installation and ongoing maintenance planning.
