Hamilton County commissioners voted April 28 to terminate the county's mandatory compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle upfit program and to make CNG installation permissive for departments that want to continue the practice.
The Director of Administration (presenter) outlined reasons for terminating the mandatory program, citing high installation costs, limited cost-effectiveness on low‑mileage vehicles, and operational issues including underutilization and space constraints. The director said CNG systems often do not reach payback until five years of use or more and sometimes never on lower‑mileage units.
Commissioners discussed that some departments — specifically Buildings and Grounds — wanted to continue using CNG where it is effective. The board approved a motion to discontinue the countywide requirement and make CNG use optional. Commissioners also approved a motion directing departments with existing CNG‑equipped vehicles that wish to remove those systems to coordinate removal through the Director of Administration and to bear the cost of removal and any vehicle rehab from their departmental budgets.
No dollar amounts for removal or expected savings from program termination were presented in public session.
