The Barrington Junior Women’s Club presented its annual Character Counts awards at the Village Board meeting on April 20, honoring five local volunteers for contributions to the community.
Kristen Baumann, co‑chair of Character Counts, and other presenters recognized recipients including Brian Long (citizenship), Sue Paperniak (respect), Karen Tishhauser (caring), Virginia “Ginny” Sweeney (caring), and Becky Leiter (responsibility). The presenters described nominees’ volunteer and professional work: Long’s work with the Catlow 1927 Foundation and support for numerous local nonprofits; Paperniak’s role as a school bus driver known for attentiveness to children; Tishhauser’s work as an English teacher at Station Middle School; Sweeney’s long service with the Barrington Area Council on Aging and Meals on Wheels; and Leiter’s leadership with the Roseland Road School PTO.
Baumann noted the Barrington Junior Women’s Club is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides scholarships and grants and runs the Safety Town summer camp; the club’s website was given as bjwc.org. The board and attendees congratulated the winners; those honored were invited for a group photo after the meeting.
No board action was required for the awards; the presentations were part of the evening’s agenda under the President’s introductory remarks and community recognition.
