Council members and staff used the April 28 meeting to remind residents about a tree giveaway and to clarify how the city handles planting trees in public right-of-way areas.
A council member encouraged neighbors to come to the market to pick up free trees provided by Duke (electric utility) and said the city will donate and inspect trees proposed for planting in the right of way to avoid conflicts with water lines and other infrastructure. "They just gotta come out and inspect where, you know, all the water lines and everything are, and they plant the trees in the roadway place so it doesn't mess with the infrastructure," a council member said.
Public Works staff reported the city has been "aggressively approaching our urban forestry" since the division returned to full staffing, and that the city has received awards for planting more trees than it removed over the past two years.
Council members said they had seen new plantings in neighborhoods and encouraged residents to participate; the city will handle location inspections before planting in the right-of-way.
